The only screw at the bottom (there are 2 on the side totaling 3 altogether) that holds this large sized dust port is held in by a screw thats so undersized it serves no purpose and goes right through the mounting hole on the chute itself.

My wood of choice is usually rock maple and I've had no issues planing guitar necks at around 2' wide through to guitar body halves up to 9' wide. I also use it for finishing cheap stud pine for other projects and of course, after dealing with the maple the pine offers little resistance. I'm confused by other reviews who say they've had the motor bog down on hardwoods. I normally skim 1/32' (around half a turn) at a time, sometimes a little more, sometimes less and don't recall the motor struggling.

Not sure if I've ever tried taking 1/16' or more off of hardwood in a single pass so maybe that's where the problem lies? My latest project was to make a loft bed for my 11 year-old daughter and she had no issues making adjustments and running the boards herself after a little instruction. My intention was to buy the DW735 but could not find one locally. After some debate I decided to settle for the DW734. So far I am glad I did PROS: Set up only took a few minutes.

Install the handle, install the dust hood, give the tables a good coat of wax and you are off to the races. It's MUCH quieter than my old planer.

It still requires hearing protection because planing operations are quite loud, but the motor runs much quieter. Cut quality is outstanding. This is to be expected from a 3 knife planer. I planed some very curly maple which is notorious for tearing out in the planer. I did get some slight chipping on a small spot, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a card scraper. The depth of cut gauge is nice. My previous model did not have this feature.

Now there is no more guessing as to how much material I am taking off. The cutterhead lock does a great job at reducing snipe. On perfectly flat boards there is no snipe at all. On boards with a little cup or twist, the leading edge will snipe a bit. All planers snipe to some extent, the amount on this model is well within the acceptable range. It's plenty powerful enough, Even planing 11' wide 4 foot long exotic hardwood boards (canarywood, purpleheart and Wenge) was not a problem with light cuts.

CONS I don't think the knives are going to hold an edge as long as my previous unit. One is nicked already after about 100bf of material. I would prefer sharpenable HSS knives to disposables. Dust collection is not great. I am using a powerful dust collector and no reductions (full 4'). The port has not clogged on me yet, but there is more chip ejection out of the rear of the planer than I would like. The dust collection manifold should be quite a bit larger.

Overall I was expecting a lot less from this planer and am pleasantly surprised. I am glad I didn't spend the extra money on the 735x.

The speed selection/finish quality is not important because I mill my lumber proud and achieve final dimensions by hand. I've used it on hardwoods and softwoods with equal success. The cuts are clean and smooth plus I have never had a snipe problem. I think that there are two reasons for that. The first reason is that I don't try to take too large a cut so that I can get the job done faster. The second reason is, I believe, even more important. Support your work on both the in-feed and out-feed side with more than the included extensions. If the work is started into the planner flat and well supported on both ends this will probably eliminate most of your snipe issues.

Last summer my wife and I contracted with a two-man construction firm to build a 14 by 16 foot back yard summer house.

They built the roof with 5x6 red cedar timbers and 5/4 x 8 pine lumber. There were some pieces of this nice wood left over and I thought it would be a shame to waste it. I decided that this otherwise wasted lumber could make some nice furnishings for the cabin. I should say that I am not a well experienced carpenter or joiner.

I'm a retired college teacher who had done a few simple projects in the past. I free-hand sketched some plans for a coffee table, an end table and a magazine table based on the sizes of the left over boards. The task was to re-saw these thick pieces of pine and cedar into a usable size with my 10 inch table saw. Then, the rough-sawn wood needed to be planed accurately to the dimensions I wanted so I could glue the boards together into table tops, legs and side panels. I searched on line for thickness planers and decided that the DeWalt Model # DW734 planer was the best choice because of the price and features. The thickness gage helped me know how deep a cut I was about to make each time I adjusted the cutter depth.

The three blades (rather than the more common two) promised to make each pass though the planer smooth. The planer worked beautifully right out of the box. Almost no set-up required. The pine boards I was using had lots of knot holes, but the planer cut through them with virtually no chips or gouges. The pine was used to make the coffee table and end table. For the magazine table, I planed the red cedar boards to just over 3/4 inch thick and planed the edges smooth to cut 10 or 12 boards about five inches wide.

When the boards were joined with biscuits, I constructed several 12 1/2 inch wide panels that were smooth and seamless. I used the planer to make each panel exactly 3/4 inch thick by using the planer's built-in turret depth stop. The precision cuts of the planer made joining the red cedar panels into the table easy, and the planer left a perfect, blemish free surface so the varnish went on smoothly with minimal sanding. Within minutes it was up and running. The cut was much better than expected. Taking the white oak from 4/4 to 3/4 the finish was almost to the point of not needing sanding.

I owned a cabinet shop for almost 30 years and typically we purchased lumber planed to size. For those odd pieces I used my $20,000 time savers wide belt sander. The finish on this was equal to the finish of the sander. I would purchase this again and would recommend it to anyone looking to use it for a home shop.
